This morning the alarm jolted us awake at 3:30 a.m. After a quick cup of coffee, a graham cracker with Whole Foods organic peanut butter, and ten minutes of stretching, Jim and I headed out the door at 4:00 a.m. for a run. The temperature was around 55 degrees. Perfect running weather!
We ran 7 miles at a 9:27 pace. Now why couldn’t I have run at that pace when we were running in Boulder the other day? Perhaps, I was better hydrated and more rested. Whatever the reasons, the run felt really good for me. Jim on the other hand, didn’t feel quite as good as I did. He was glad when the run was over.
After the run I was craving a yogurt smoothie. So, I prepared myself a blueberry, mango, banana yogurt smoothie, sprinkled with granola. It was fabulous and left me feeling satisfied and full for several hours. Here is the recipe:
Blueberry, Banana, Mango Yogurt Smoothie
Place the following ingredients in a blender.
Blend until smooth.
Pour into glass and sprinkle with granola
Enjoy!
1/3 cup of frozen blueberries
1/3 cup of frozen banana
1/3 cup of frozen mango
1/2 cup of non-fat vanilla yogurt
1/2 cup of non-fat milk
1-2 drops of vanilla
2 Tbsps of granola
Tomorrow is a rest day! So with a little luck, I will be able to sleep until 4:30 tomorrow morning.

Training for the 2009 Boulder Backroads Half-Marathon
In an effort to familiarize and prepare for the 11th Annual 2009 Boulder Backroads Half-Marathon being held on September 20, 2009, Jim and I decided to run 10 miles of the race course this morning. It was a beautiful morning. We started the run at 7:00 a.m. The temperatures were cool, there was no wind, the sun was shining, the sky was blue as blue can be, and ferruginous hawks were busy doing what they do best, searching for food.
As the name implies, this race is run on the backroads of Boulder. A majority of the course in on dirt roads, however, there are stretches of asphalt. The views of the Flatirons and Rocky Mountains are spectacular!
Jim and I felt pretty strong during the run. A couple of times I fueled up on some GU Chomps Energy Chews and Jim had a GU Energy Gel. Jim especially felt good, as he finished the run with a blazing 9:15 pace. I plodded along at a much slower pace and finished with a 9:45 pace.
After our run we went and had breakfast at the Blue Sky Yoga Café, located across from the Colorado Mills, next to Hops Brewery. There we devoured a delicious breakfast and savored our weekly non-fat latte. To me, lattes are a tiny piece of heaven swirling around in my mouth!
After breakfast we headed to our favorite running store, The Runners Roost, located in the Belmar Shopping Center in Lakewood. We signed up for the Park-to-Park 10 Miler. This race is being held on Labor Day, September 7, 2009 and will take us around 4 of Denver's parks. We also purchased new running shoes.
My existing shoes have 485 miles on them and I’ve begun to feel pain in my heels, a sure sign that the shoes are ready to be replaced. I purchased another pair of Asics GEL-Nimbus 11s. I’ve run in Asics GEL-Nimbus running shoes for years, but oh, the new color on this pair is so cool. Purple, gray, silver and black; Colorado Rockies colors! Of course I had to buy some socks to match, so I bought a couple pairs of Balegas Lady Enduro running socks.
Jim has 400 miles on his running shoes and purchased a pair of Brooks Adrenaline GTS 9s. He was a little disappointed that the color was the same as his last pair. He would like to eventually try another shoe brand but doesn't want to change this close to the Boulder Half-Marathon, so he stayed with the shoe that works for him.
